Losing files

November 10, 2009

If you lose files by deleting them, when you really needed them, that isn’t organisation, that is wasting your time and effort. Such as, I just wrote this blog entry, went to another site to check something without saving it and discovered I had to start again when I came back – yes, I’m human too. So here’s the thing. If you type a post, save it even if you’re not ready to publish it. If you want to delete a file because you think it’s no use any more, look closely at the contents first. If necessary, save just the important portion into another document. When the computer prompts you to check if you really want to delete this file, check again. It’s good to free up computer space and make your files easy to find because they’re not cluttered, but you just get stressed if you lose a file that’s important. There are programs that can retrieve lost files of course such as the one at
http://tinyurl.com/yjh73x5 or go to http://tinyurl.com/yevm97x to see it.

Organise!

November 9, 2009

Hi there organisers and would-be organisers.  I get a lot of satisfaction from sorting stuff out.    Every post I will find some new tip for you.

Today I’m talking about notes you take on the computer.  Often you want to get your thoughts in order, and if you’re at the computer, you might start several Notepad entries.  Think ahead – as soon as you realise you are making a few notes you want to keep but you don’t know the best place to store them, stop typing, and open a new folder under Documents called Notes, general.  Then when you finish your Notepad entry, you have a folder to store them in until you find a permanent home for them.

Alternatively, my preferred solution is OneNote, which has tabs you can label to suit yourself in the Notebooks.  You could have a General Notebook, and a Work Notebook, a Family Occasions Notebook – whatever suits your life, and use at least one tabbed page for general notes till you know where they should best be kept.

See you soon.  Christine.
